TROY SOAT, MS, NCC

I am a pre-licensed mental health counselor in South Dakota working under the supervision of Richard Culver, LPC-MH. I earned my master’s degree in counseling from South Dakota State University in 2023 and hold a Bachelor of Arts in Art with a focus on Art Therapy from the University of Sioux Falls. My background includes experience in community mental health, where I’ve supported clients navigating a wide range of concerns.

My work is grounded in collaboration and respect. I draw from approaches like Motivational Interviewing to support people facing important decisions, and Brief Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to promote safety, emotional balance, and practical coping strategies. I also incorporate Family Systems theory to help clients understand how relationships and environments shape their experiences—and how patterns within those systems can be shifted. Together, we focus on identifying what’s not working, solving problems in real time, and taking meaningful steps toward change.

I am especially passionate about working with teens, young adults, and men. For teens and young adults, these years can bring both excitement and pressure—identity questions, shifting relationships, academic stress, and the growing weight of adult decisions. I offer a space where young people can reflect, ask questions, and build insight in a way that feels safe, validating, and empowering. Together, we work toward stronger self-understanding, emotional resilience, and tools to navigate life with greater confidence.

I also specialize in men’s mental health. Many men carry emotional burdens silently—shaped by cultural expectations to stay strong, keep things in, or “tough it out” alone. I aim to challenge those messages by creating a space that’s grounded, direct, and respectful—where men can talk openly about what’s really going on. Whether it’s stress, anger, anxiety, relationships, or past experiences, I help men develop tools that feel practical and aligned with their values—without judgment, and without pressure to be anyone but themselves.

  • Prior to joining Evenson Counseling, I worked at Community Counseling Services in Madison, where I delivered therapeutic interventions and counseling services to a diverse population, ranging from children to adults. I completed my counseling internship at Brookings Behavioral Health and Wellness, where I facilitated individual and group counseling for adults and children.
