LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit Affirming Therapy
You are not alone
Finding a therapist who truly understands LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit experiences shouldn’t be difficult — especially in rural communities. At Evenson Counseling, we provide affirming, respectful therapy for people across South Dakota and Minnesota, both in person and through secure telehealth.
Many LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit individuals experience stress that others may not always see. This can include identity questions, coming out, relationship concerns, discrimination, trauma, family challenges, or the ongoing strain of feeling misunderstood. Even in supportive environments, this can be exhausting.
You don’t have to navigate that alone.
How we support LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit clients
Our clinicians work with individuals navigating:
• Identity exploration and self-understanding
• Gender identity and gender expression
• Coming out and life transitions
• Relationship and family concerns
• Trauma and minority stress
• Anxiety, depression, and burnout
• Religious or cultural identity conflict
• Building confidence and self-acceptance
• Living in environments that may feel isolating or less affirming
Our work is grounded in respect, collaboration, and cultural humility. We do not assume one path or one definition of identity. Instead, we focus on understanding your experience and supporting the direction that feels right for you.
We recognize Two-Spirit as a cultural identity used by some Indigenous people to describe diverse gender and sexual identities within their communities, and we approach this work with respect for the cultural and personal meaning identity may hold.
Your concerns don’t have to be about identity
Not everything you want to work on in therapy has to be about being LGBTQ+ or Two-Spirit.
Many people seek affirming therapy not because identity is the main concern, but because they want a therapist where they don’t have to explain basic parts of who they are before they can talk about what’s actually bringing them in. You might want support with anxiety, depression, relationships, work stress, trauma, grief, or simply feeling overwhelmed.
Your identity can be part of your story without being the only story.
At Evenson Counseling, we don’t assume what you need to talk about. Some clients want to focus on identity. Others just want a therapist who understands them so they can focus on everyday life challenges. Both are completely valid.
You get to decide what therapy is about.
Our role is simply to provide a respectful, supportive space where you can work on what matters most to you — without having to filter yourself or educate your therapist first.
Because affirming care isn’t about making identity the focus.
It’s about making sure you are fully respected while you focus on your life.
Affirming care for rural South Dakota and Minnesota
Access to affirming mental health care can be limited in rural areas. Many people travel long distances for care or delay seeking support because they worry about being understood.
Through secure telehealth, Evenson Counseling provides access to affirming therapy throughout South Dakota and Minnesota. This allows many clients to receive care privately and conveniently from their own homes.
Everyone deserves access to respectful mental health care, regardless of where they live.
You deserve affirming care
You deserve therapy where you can show up fully as yourself — without filtering, explaining, or shrinking parts of who you are.
At Evenson Counseling, our goal is to provide a place where you feel seen, respected, and supported as you move toward the life you want.
