Bonnie burkett, Ma, LPC-MH, NCC
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor–Mental Health (LPC-MH) in South Dakota. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work from the University of South Dakota in 1994 and earned my Master of Arts degree in Counseling from the University of South Dakota in 2005. I bring over 20 years of experience supporting adults and seniors in a variety of settings, including hospital mental health services, palliative care, and services for veterans.
I enjoy working with adolescents, adults, and seniors facing a wide range of mental health concerns. My background includes helping individuals and families navigate grief, loss, caregiving, complex health concerns, and difficult life circumstances. I offer a supportive space where you can feel heard, understood, and accepted as we work toward the changes you want to make.
My approach is collaborative and tailored to your needs, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, person-centered therapy, and trauma-informed care. Together, we will explore patterns, build on your strengths, and develop tools to help you feel more confident and better equipped to manage life’s challenges.
I also believe there is room for humor and connection in the work of healing. Personally, I appreciate a good laugh, a good cry, a walk, or lifting a heavy barbell. My goal is to meet you where you are, hear your story, and support you in creating a life that feels more balanced, connected, and fulfilling.

My experience includes supporting individuals and families in hospital, mental health, veterans’ services, and long-term care settings. At Sanford USD Medical Center, I have helped people navigate mental health crises, changing health needs, and transitions following hospitalization. My work in palliative care included supporting patients and their loved ones through complex medical decisions and end-of-life concerns.
At the Veterans Administration, I worked with veterans experiencing homelessness, helping them find housing and connect with resources for their physical and mental health. These experiences have deepened my understanding of how emotional well-being is shaped by our health, relationships, and everyday circumstances. I bring that perspective to counseling, along with compassion, curiosity, and respect for each person’s story.
